Dallas Center for Architecture - A Nexus for Cultural Events
The Dallas Center for Architecture (DCFA), is not only a hub for architectural excellence but also serves as a vibrant venue for cultural events that connect the community with various forms of artistic expression. This summer, the spotlight is on the enthralling world of surfing, seen through the lens of photographer Leroy Grannis.
The Dallas Architecture Forum - A Season of Enrichment
Embracing the season’s warmth, the DCFA collaborates with the distinguished Dallas Architecture Forum to host a series of events. These gatherings are designed to marry the aesthetics of surfing culture with architectural design, extending an invitation to enthusiasts of both fields to engage in enlightening discourse.
Event Details: Capturing Surfing's Pivotal Moments
Starting from June 22nd to August 21st, 2009, the DCFA will become home to a remarkable exhibition commemorating the pioneering spirit of surfer and photographer Leroy Grannis. His work encapsulates the essence of the surfing movement in the 1960s, with vivid imagery of the California and Hawaii coastlines. Attendees will get an immersive look at the life surrounding the sport – from the waves and boards to the coastal architecture that framed this iconic era.
Exhibition Curation and Additional Elements
The exhibition is meticulously organized by independent curator Cynthia Mulcahy. Complementing the visual feast, guests will receive a brochure that guides them through Dallas' very own surfing-inspired landmarks – a perfect summer adventure for architecture and surf aficionados alike. Although, note that the centre will take a short break on July 3rd, resuming with its regular hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays thereafter.
Accessibility and Admission
Emphasizing inclusivity, the DCFA opens its doors to the public free of charge, ensuring that this fascinating fusion of surfing culture and architecture is accessible to all those interested.
Exploring Dallas Through the Lens of Travel and Architecture
The DCFA's summer event series is more than a celebration of surfing's heyday; it's an opportunity to see the city of Dallas through a new lens. As visitors delve into the surf culture of the past, they are invited to reflect on the influence of such movements on local architecture. The experience typifies the profound and captivating way that travel can open our eyes to the interconnectedness of culture and the built environment, inspiring us to see our surroundings with fresh appreciation and enthusiasm.
